How do herbs work?

People have always relied on plants for food to nourish and sustain the body.  Herbal medicine can be seen in the same way.  Plants with a particular affinity for certain organs or systems of the body are used to ‘feed’ and restore to health those parts which have become weakened.  As the body is strengthened so is its power and ability to fight off disease and when balance and harmony are restored, health will be regained.

Herbal medicine is the forerunner of modern medicine, which derives many drugs from plant sources but uses individual plant compounds in isolation.  Medical Herbalists use the whole plant because it contains a complex mixture of compounds that work together to give a gentle healing effect without the side effects. For example, the drug aspirin was derived from Willow Bark.  As a drug, aspirin can cause ulcerations in the stomach lining, whereas Willow Bark -as prescribed by an Herbalist- contains balancing antiacid properties and can actually be used by patients with irritation to the gut lining.

Where do the herbs come from and are they organic and traceable?

Jeanette imports all of her herbs from the UK and they are all traceable from the origin.  Ninety-five percent of the herbs she uses in her practice are organically grown.  She has personally visited all of the farms where she buys her supplies and knows the growers, all of whom are also Qualified Medical Herblists.

How are the herbs prescribed and prepared?

No two patients are alike, even if they appear to be suffering the similar symptoms, so no two prescriptions are exacly the same.   Jeanette prescribes and prepares the herbal remedies for each individual. She formulates the prescription and compounds the herbal preparations in her dispensary.

She does not use any animal or mineral materials in her prescriptions, nor does she prescribe or employ any orthodox pharmaceuticals.

At the end of a consultation, Jeanette prepares an herbal blend unique for each individual's needs.  Herbs that are to be taken internally are dispensed in either a tincture format, in which the raw plant material has been extracted in an alcohol medium, or in a dried format to be prepared as a tea.   Occasionally she dispenses in capsule format, where a blend of dried, powdered herbs has been packaged into a capsule.

When treating children, the remedies are often flavoured with herbal syrups to make them more palatable.  If a topical preparation is required, she will also make that up based on what the condition calls for, be it an ointment, cream, lotion, pessary or capsule, utilizing a relevant range of essential oils, herbal infused oils and decoctions or tinctures.

Does Jeanette prescribe supplements?

Jeanette is also trained in nutriton medicine and often recommend supplements where she feels it is necessary.  She always looks to adjust the diet where relevant so that the maximum nutrition is being supplied; however, in some cases the level of certain minerals, vitamins or essential fatty acids required cannot be easily obtained from diet alone and therefore needs to be supplemented.
